Sandy Schembri is an accomplished public policy professional with a strong reputation as a trusted advisor to senior leaders in both federal and provincial governments. With an academic background in political science and applied energy economics, Sandy has significant experience across the energy sector throughout his public service career. He has been pivotal in advancing Canada's clean energy and climate agenda, in his most recent role as Director of Policy to Canada's Minister of Energy & Natural Resources. During this time, he led on priority policy files such as the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, the development of Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits, Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy, Clean Fuel Regulations, and the Clean Electricity Strategy and Canada's nuclear policy. He has also played a key role in intergovernmental negotiations on major initiatives, including Bill C-49 and the Atlantic Loop.
Sandy’s journey in public service began with key roles in the Government of Nova Scotia, where he served as a senior advisor on energy policy and managed key policy implementation and cabinet processes in the Office of the Premier. His experience also includes senior roles within the federal government, where he supported critical policy development during spells with the Minister of Infrastructure Canada and the President of the Treasury Board of Canada.
In addition to his public service experience, Sandy was Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Truro Cannabis, where he helped guide the company’s growth, navigate the regulatory landscape, and manage community and stakeholder relations within Canada’s evolving cannabis sector.
Based in Ottawa and splitting time between Halifax, Sandy is well-known and respected within government and industry circles across Atlantic Canada, particularly within the clean energy sector.
